Nothing really new about that, using fibers bonded electronically to increase overall bandwidth is nothing more than the old using multiple bonded T1’s to increase bandwidth.
The only real difference with what they did was use a multiple multi-core fiber versus dozens maybe hundreds of discrete fibers. which begs the question why did they claim to be using ordinary fibers?
And I used to think ribbon was tough to splice, then came spiderweb and now multi-core, who knows what’s next.
