I just finished this one. It was okay, but I wasn’t really into it. Usually when I “binge” a show, I watch two episodes a week on the weekend. And I kind of look forward to the next weekend to see the next episodes. For this series, I didn’t really find myself eagerly anticipating the next episodes.
Just as a couple of general issues, compared to the time of the original series, superhero stuff is starting to get tired, where as before it was still a little fresh. And, probably the least interesting storyline for a superhero is the “I don’t want to be a superhero anymore” storyline. Obviously, they’re going to take up the mantle again, otherwise it wouldn’t be a superhero show anymore. So all that’s left is their normal life and the struggle to stay out of it until they decide to start fighting again. The episodes were fairly short (most were less than 40 minutes, which is shorter than an average hour long standard network TV show), and they still added all those random street interviews as filler, which served no purpose.
Removing the original cast was a poor choice too. You lost the camaraderie with his friends. They have to introduce a new romantic interest that we don’t really care about, or that is particularly likeable. And (episode 9 spoiler) They basically just drop the new interest and bring back Karen anyways in the last episode. And it’s done in a way where she just pops up again at random with no real story behind it.
And then we get the tired trope of the new girlfriend being wedged into the life of the villain as a psychologist. (Episode 9 spoiler) I also found myself completely disengaged with the new girlfriend aligning herself with Fisk. I already didn’t care about her. I’m not sure how a psychologist joining the bad guys is a compelling story. Although it’ll probably have to do with her novel
The Muse was just a drop-in villain. He was basically irrelevant. He’s a street artist that was killing people, and he was such a problem that nobody even noticed he was killing people. And his backstory was that he was angry at his parents for teaching him (conveniently) martial arts.
The new lawfirm kind of felt pointless. The new work partner was of no relevance at all.
I’m probably in the minority here, since I’ve heard people really liked it, but having Fisk again be the main villain felt like a retread. I found a lot of his scenes to be boring.
I think I actually found the bank robbery bottle episode to be one of the most enjoyable.
And, disappointingly (episode 9 spoiler) there was no real conclusion to the season. Or even a cliffhanger. It just ended on a setup for next season.
