X99 motherboard recommendations

I have several obviously older X79 M/Bs but now looking to build/setup using a slightly newer X99 M/B. Purchase using eBay. Anyone have any recommendations for a “better” model to get?
Possibly looking at the Asus Rampage V, X99-Deluxe II, or a STRIX X99 Gaming.

Jbob what’s the purpose? and why are you upgrading motherboards? Are you hoping to upgrade the RAM, presumably because you have DDR3 in your X79 and want more DDR4?

Mostly just to have one. No other special purpose. I like to tinker.

I feel like you can get something newer for the same amount of money, that’s a pretty old chipset by today’s standards. The Q/H370 or Z390 chipset boards with CPUs are going really cheap, I’ve seen used systems go for a couple hundred bucks with RAM, drive, etc..

Would say, if you were able to arrange a local pickup, I still have Darkrai (my former main X99 platform) not presently being used, and would love to see it go to an appreciable home. 🤷

I have had an ASUS X99-A motherboard sine it was released. Decent board IMO. It can be a little finicky with RAM though. FWIW, I no longer buy ASUS boards.

Their CSM and TUF boards are extremely reliable. During the X99 era I was using Intel for that small amount of time they were still making motherboards.

urbanriot It just seemed like I was paying extra for ASUS boards and not getting a lot to show for it. Generally they held up OK but developed little quirks or, in the case of two different ASUS boards, the onboard SATA ports failed.

urbanriot I started my x99 journey with a gigabyte X99-sli; for equal parts because it had a more sensible lane allocation even with 28-lane CPUs (which mattered at time of purchase) and I still had high hopes of doing SLI or crossfire on the system.

However, that board did finally die, which from the symptoms suggests a vrm on it grenaded itself for how suddenly it failed.

Board I’m running now, is a sabertooth x99 I picked up secondhand. With the 6950x, lane allocation is fine. It’s m.2 slot is also faster as a plus. Though I do agree that Asus boards can get quirky.
