NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 8 is set
The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 8 field is cemented after non-playoff driver Shane van Gisbergen picked up his fifth consecutive road-course victory Sunday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval.

Joey Logano clinched the final spot in the semifinal round, using fresh tires after a pit stop with 11 laps to go to sneak past Ross Chastain by four points. Tied going into the final corners, Chastain entered the frontstretch chicane at high speed, knocking Denny Hamlin around in a last-ditch attempt to advance. Chastain also spun, reversing to the start/finish line but not in time to advance as Logano picked up multiple spots in the melee. more

NASCAR competition officials announced Wednesday that the target horsepower for Cup Series events at road courses and oval tracks less than 1.5 miles in length will increase to 750 in the 2026 season.

NASCAR president Steve O’Donnell revealed the news on this week’s edition of the Dale Jr. Download podcast. The horsepower figure will be an increase from the baseline 670 in the current rules configuration for NASCAR’s top division. more

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin kicked off the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 8 in style by capturing the Busch Light Pole Award for Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (5:30 p.m. ET, USA Network, HBO Max, PRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NBC Sports App).

The driver of the No. 11 Toyota soared to the top of the charts with a speed of 184.849 mph, earning his fourth pole of the season and the 47th of his career. Hamlin led the charge as three JGR drivers swept the top three starting spots, with Chase Briscoe (184.622 mph) and Christopher Bell (184.584 mph) qualifying second and third, respectively.

Hendrick Motorsports drivers Chase Elliott (184.559 mph) and William Byron (184.275 mph) rounded out the top five.

Michael McDowell soars to Busch Light Pole at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Michael McDowell may be driving for a new team this year, but the Spire Motorsports driver still proved himself to be one of the fastest at a superspeedway, earning the Busch Light Pole Award for Sunday’s YellaWood 500 Round of 8 playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway (2 p.m. ET, NBC, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Peacock).

McDowell turned in a lap of 182.466 mph in the No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Saturday afternoon to claim the lead position in Sunday’s pivotal NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs race — the second of the final three-race round to determine which four drivers will be championship-eligible in the Nov. 2 finale at Phoenix Raceway.

McDowell bettered playoff driver Chase Briscoe by a slight .019 seconds on the lap around the 2.66-mile track. It’s the eighth pole position of McDowell’s career and the second of the 2025 season, matching his work at the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March. more
