cypherstream Well, I finally signed up for X-class this week. I grabbed the $70 for 2-gig down and up deal that Xfinity had going on with free Peacock and one year of free unlimited Xfinity mobile.
I got the XB10 from UPS today and did a self-install. Everything went very smooth with the install and I added it as a third ISP into my pfSense firewall/router. All good so far. I still have both Metronet 5gbps down/up with static IP for $110/mo, and I reduced Quantum from 8gbps to 3gbps a few months back (speed change was not noticeable on Steam downloads). I’ll be putting X-class through it’s paces over the next couple days and will probably cancel Quantum.
One oddity with this service is the way the plan shows up on my bill. It shows both as the 2-gig plan and the 1.2-gig plan at the same time. I assume this is just a quirk with how it is coded in the system, but it did have me concerned that they were sending me the wrong equipment because one of confirmation the emails they sent had listed the mid-split upload speeds. I was relieved when it was the XB10 that arrived and I plugged it in and got 2400/2400.
I’ve been away from Xfinity / Comcast for about 16 months, so is there anything earth-shattering I should know about the service nowadays? I’m divided if I want to keep the gateway in its native mode (use it as a less trusted outer network with DMZ set for my inner pfSense router) or switch it into bridge mode and just use it as a wired pipe only. The only downside I see to using it as the outer network would be lack of IPv6 higher than a /128 (need /62 or better, I think, for pfSense IPv6 routing), and the inability to override the DNS setting in the gateway, unlike Quantum.
The only hiccup I have run into so far was that NextDNS was interfering with Steam on the Xfinity connection. I swapped my pfSense DNS to 1.1.1.2 and it cleared that up, but I’ll try to troubleshoot that later this week.
I know next to nothing about the XB10 other than it has WiFi 7 and has two 10G and two 1G ports. It looks like mine is the Technicolor/Vantiva CGM601TCOM, though I have no idea what the difference is between this and the other XB10 model(s). The XB10 I received was in a plain brown box, and looks like it had been used previously (was a little bit dirty).
