T-Mobile is sharing your data by default, here's how to opt out

T-Mobile drew customer ire earlier this year after quietly updating its privacy settings to include a new section that automatically opted users into “Profiling and automated decisions.” Now, the carrier is facing renewed backlash for adding two additional privacy settings that permit the sharing of user data with third parties.

T-Mobile’s Privacy Center has quietly added two new toggles, and both enabled by default. The first, labeled “Fraud and identity theft protection,” allows the carrier to share users’ personal data with third parties, ostensibly to help prevent fraud. The shared information includes account details, usage activity, communication patterns, and interactions with potentially malicious URLs.

Thanks! I did a deep-dive using the website. I had already disabled a bunch of stuff, but then found a few options that were stilled enabled. I turned off / disabled everything I could see.

One surprise was that T-Mobile had a different email used for marketing purposes. Go to “Marketing communication opt-out preferences”. You’ll see an entry for “Marketing Email:”. It was an old email that I no longer use. I changed it to my account email. Otherwise, I’m thinking that the marketing crap could still be sent to my current email. Hopefully, this will kill it.

I also requested deletion of personal data. Once it’s confirmed, Ill request an inquiry to see if anything remains.

I found the info hard to access, and the websites balky.

That’s actually typical for T-Mobile of course.

I did apparently manage to turn off the basic sharing toggles on my T-Mobile Connect cellphone account.

Not successful with my T-Mobile Business 5G Internet account though. By some miracle it DID bring up the appropriate page ONE time, but it may not have “taken”, and I could NEVER get the page back again.

It was like a funhouse-mirror journey of tantalizing pages, the right one always just out of reach through a score of attempts, as though Kafka had written the script for Groundhog Day.

It’s when T-Mobile becomes T-Möbius.

Möbius himself was from Germany, so maybe one of his descendants helped to found T-Mobile.

A few days ago, I got an email that my privacy request needed attention. I forgot to respond to it until now.

It’s a login to a T-Mobile subdomain of onetrust. They’re making this as difficult as possible.

Thank you for submitting a personal data request. Now that we have confirmed your identity using the information you provided to us, we’ll fulfill your request and get back to you within 45 days from the date we received your request. If necessary, we will inform you if we need additional time to complete your request, up to an additional 45 days.

You will receive an email that contains login information to a secure Personal Data Portal, where you can view the progress of your request. You will be notified of updates in the Personal Data Portal by email, including telling you whether your request has been successfully completed. If we were unable to complete your request, we will provide an explanation.
