I used to watch the Cosby show when I was a kid back in the 80’s. It never occurred to me that a black person being an M.D. or a lawyer was a major achievement in western civilization. I just thought they were just another TV family.

During the report I saw about this on the news, they said swimming parallel to the shore is no longer a recommended tactic for escaping a rip current.😕😲 I was planning on using that tactic if I ever got caught in one. Now they say to get a life guard’s attention, float on your back, and wait for the lifeguard to rescue you. What are you supposed to do if there’s no lifeguard around?

I’ve always wondered if people diied from being caught in a rip current because they panicked or regardless of if they panicked or not. This is never clarified in the news reports for these incidents.

Low Risk of rip currents. The risk for rip currents is low, however, life threatening rip currents often occur in the vicinity of groins, jetties, reefs, and piers.

Navy bootcamp swim test requires treading water for 5 minutes beyond that you’re fish food. They did teach you to use your dungarees and white hat as flotation devices.

It would be extremely realistic if he were using “drownproofing” techniques rather than “treading water” as a person could float for as long as the temperature allows. Some people don’t even have to work at it, I’ve napped while free floating in the ocean before.

Groins are shore perpendicular structures, used to maintain updrift beaches or to restrict longshore sediment transport.
