Like other late-night shows before it, “The Late Show” was canceled when the network could not figure how to make the finances work in an entertainment world increasingly dominated by streaming.
That can be said for pretty much the whole broadcast schedule on CBS (and the other networks) though.
“Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” will probably be their LAST marriage.
There are ways to do things cheaper.
Remember, during the start of the pandemic, Colbert was doing the show from his house….!
The other night he said that the show had a staff of 200 people.
That’s hard to fathom especially in these days of high automation.
It would be better to keep the show even if only with a staff of 20 people, rather than for all 200 to lose their jobs.
Likewise, use some other CBS production facility (or make other arrangements) rather than have the current expensive building (Ed Sullivan Theater) in mid-Manhattan…
But network execs tend to be Dilbert types, otherwise they would not make shows such as “My Mother The Car”….
