"CRO" on credit card statement

My wife just ordered some clothing items online from a site I’ll call “Anystore.com”.

Her credit card statement says Transaction Pending with “CRO Anystore.com”.

Bank had no info on what this means.

Online, there are a lot of references to “CRO” being some sort of cryptocurrency transaction…

Anybody see this before?

It is usually a pre-authorization amount, like what happens when you pay at the pump at a gas station.

Just curious, is the amount accurate, or did it exceed what the total was supposed to be? Or was it a separate charge for a small amount? Your invoice from the online store should itemize any charges. CRO is usually used to denote a charge for using a terminal like a gas station, ATM etc. It could be(I’m guessing) that the online store used it to charge you for the payment processor’s fee. I’d dispute the charge if it was more than what you thought your purchase should be. Your credit card company can help there.

Interesting but this was a payment to a presumably US site, although the clothing purchased is almost surely made in China. No European connection AFAICT.

CRO stands for “Conversion Rate Optimizer” which is what probably anystore.com is. Conversion is a fancy word for “sales.”. Basically they helped a business “convert” a person into a customer by buying the product and they work on converting more and more visitors to a site into doing the same.

Ummm…no. Not in this context. It’s to get a visitor of a web site to do something you want them to do. In this case to buy something (ie make a sale). It’s not about currency exchange.

Is the company registered in Ireland? CRO is the Irish Companies Registration Office.

The Companies Registration Office (the CRO) is the central repository of public statutory information on Irish companies, business names, and limited partnerships

The credit card statement is including “CRO” as part of the business name. It’s like “company name, Inc.” to mean Incorporated, but for Ireland.
