David Gergen, a towering figure in U.S. politics and founder of the Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership, has died. A champion of leadership education at HKS, Gergen leaves a lasting legacy as a political analyst, adviser, and leadership mentor
I cannot remember a more fair-minded public commentator. I used to watch him along with Mark Shields on the PBS PBS’s NewsHour (formerly The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour). Always of a reasonable mind in every respect with eminent character. An adviser to four presidents, both Democratic and Republican.

David Gergen was an advisor to four presidents. From top left, clockwise: President Richard Nixon with staff, in 1973. President Gerald Ford with staff, in 1976. President Bill Clinton with Vice President Al Gore and Gergen, 1993. President Ronald Reagan with staff in 1983.
