Maintenance every other week, nothing changes...?

Been getting these maintenance messages every other week for what feels like almost a year now. Internet never goes out, and the “maintenance” is done almost instantly (the message goes away within 5 minutes). Still on low split. Nothing ever changes, same speeds, same channel SNR/Power/Frequencies. Should I be hopeful for FDX? or What’s going on here?

Awesome! Over a month of no Maintenance and the service online near 100% of the time. Minus a CRAN Fiber cut that happened after midnight and was resolved at 4:40 am on September 16th.

Maintenance for all mid-split nodes served off of the headend is set for 10/15/2025 at 1:00 am.

The other day i had a chance to ask a Xfinity Employee in a bucket truck some questions 🙂 In my area of St Paul we have one dedicated employee who works midnight shift and has a big area. So with one person replacing amps and nodes it creates a lot of outage over night.

hex0101 The employee I talked too said that at the moment it is patchy in St Paul with areas of Maplewood and North St Paul. Bus some areas of St Paul have service as well. In My areas in my area of the city the Monstrosity of a project that is going on at the old Hillcrest Country club has it so I am hoping not too long for me. I was told me are skipping mid splits in the city and going full FDX.

I’m thinking my area is in the same boat. Upgrades happen every 5 years or so. I’m thinking when they unveil it, they’ll just go right to FDX. Despite the fact I’ve been watching things happen for 6 months now.

Well they must have done a lot of maintenance in my area as even Metro-E dedicated connections went offline at the same time as my DOCSIS modem. Also the connection connected and disconnected several times during the maintenance. Same as my last maintenance. However in the past it was only one disconnect and that was it.

Connection was up and down multiple times! But the Metro-E circuits were as well, not just DOCSIS.

Fiber work? Upgrading CRAN router firmware? Swapping out the router or other headend equipment?

Got a new WAN IPv4 address as well. (No idea if the lease expired, or if it happened because of backend changes.) Some Geo IP databases have my location wrong by hundreds of miles, those will eventually catch up though. Hop #2 (vCMTS IP) remains unchanged.

CRAN fiber damaged both times. DOCSIS and Metro-E down when this happens.

Got my Internet back after 5 hours and 20 minutes.

40 minute node outage in my neighborhood this morning. Modem was only disconnected for 40 minutes, must have been a minor issue with the cable plant that had a easy fix. No power outages, maintenance was not in the area either at the time of the outage. Maybe the node/amp fuse blew or the power supply needed a reset. HFC networks have active components in them compared to FTTH Passive Optical Networks.

Never seen this before. I also got a text message about a possible outage in my area, but everything is still working.

kmax unfortunately no, but I thought xfinity usually sends a message about a week before mid split / fdx upgrades stating that they’ll be working on said upgrades, right?

alex Yeah, that’s why I asked…about the same thing happened here. After a few weeks they started with the “We are enhancing your network” messages instead of the maintenance ones.

Depends on the contractor being used I think. During the first round involving mid-split last year they were pretty diligent. Lately however I’ve seen FDX upgrade work being done locally in some neighborhoods without Xfinity sending out notices anymore.

This of course results in people bitching on Nextdoor or Facebook about the daytime Xfinity outages to the point you can almost track were they are actively working each time lol

hex0101 Is it cold for this time of year where you are? That may be a reason for the cancellation. I had one scheduled for my area that was cancelled and that I put down to the weather as I would not want to be out there working in a sub zero windchill.

Aceq2jot FDX MT’s are constantly working in the cold resetting the input to the FDX amp in the entire span. They think its bad AGC. Some seasonal programming would be welcomed.

MER’s bounce around down to 20 db to 48 db in the cold. Faulty AGC ? Bad firmware? Software issue? In western PA and other areas in the Northeast its been very problematic. In some cases an entire span is setup and balanced and then it goes wacky days later, so they replace the mod and send these in the Commscope for investigation.

What worked in the lab or more temperate climates is driving techs crazy in the northeast. You hit the SOC at 12db and its all good but then temps drop, it goes out. Sometimes its craftsmanship issues, but then other times its just completely random.
