Astyanax
Astyanax Oh? Then why bring up FEMA’s flood maps at all?
FEMA was one of the many factors that lead to deaths in this flood. When you have the locals refer to the area as flash flood alley and FEMA decided to remove that property from the 100 year flood plane map you have to wonder why they did that and if their were any unknown factors that could have influenced that decision.
Astyanax The “stakeholders” wanted to put down the stakes of their camp where it was and to do so affordably they had to get the flood map changed.
As a result of that change they got campers killed.
Astyanax We got the flood map changed for our property. If you can get your floodplain administrator (who works in your county public works office) who can prove your property hasn’t had a 100 or 500-year flood you can get the map changed regardless of the actual danger of flooding.
Sounds like changes need to be made since it is too easy to get properties removed from the 100 or 500 year flood plane maps that never should have been removed which this flooding disaster in Texas has proven.
Astyanax Those stakeholders aren’t going to be so collaborative when FEMA feels they’re going to be coerced by public outcry to make “accurate” flood maps that “protect lives”
I could care less sometimes you have to tell people no when the proposed changes present too much risk. The problem is FEMA did not say no as a result campers died.
Astyanax flood insurance rates go up by a factor of 7 or 8 making it unaffordable to live there at all.
That should be a hint that the property is too dangerous to live in and should be torn down. Quite frankly insurance calculates risk and prices their rates accordingly.
Astyanax Then the local community loses their tax base, their economy suffers, etc.
That is the problem right their, that should never factor into a decision when it comes to safety regulations since it leads to people dying when regulations are pulled back which happened to the campers at camp mystic.
