I bought the Tablo 4th Gen when it came out. For what it is, it’s a pretty nice OTA recorder and it has over 100 streaming channels built into the guide as well. It has a few quirks but overall it’s a solid little device and for $60, it’s a deal.

What storage capacity? How much does OTA need (per hour)?

Somewhat-Reticent Based my experience with Plex using an HD Homerun tuner, 480p uses around 750Mb/hour, 720p uses around 2.5 Gb/hour and Gb1080i uses around 5Gb/hour. These numbers are for the raw Mpeg 2 TS stream recorded by Plex. No idea if Tablo does any compression. Based on the price point, it’s highly unlikely.

The Gen4 Tablo (and Legacy HDMI) record the raw video sent. The non-HDMI Legacy Tablo would convert everything to MPEG4. The Gen4, if using it’s built-in storage, will convert the video to MPEG4 after a certain amount of time. If you connect external storage, it will just record the raw video. The amount of data used will vary with your particular stations and how much they compress their video.

I had thought about updating my Tablo Quad to the newer generation. A few on the Tablo forums suggested to wait until they work out all the bugs first.

Tablo doesn’t use the PSIP data. It uses a database, mainly from Gracenote. The Legacy typically download it overnight. The Gen4 seem to be mostly on-demand, and require an active Internet connection. They are working on getting better info for some stations.
