I remember how much I was looking forward to the original movie with Schwarzenegger and I was so disappointed in how bad it was and how far removed from the book it was.

These days I re-appreciate the Schwarzenegger version as a campy b-movie but I always felt the book needed a proper adaptation.

This trailer looks great! I can’t wait.

urbanriot I think I was a kid at just the right time, I love The Bachman Books but also love Arnie’s version of The Running Man. Who knew Richard Dawson would be such a great villain? It’ll be interesting to see something closer to the original story though.

IMO that was perfect casting. I bet he had fun with that role.

I can’t find the Running Man scene where he kisses a woman in the audience in his trademark manner.

I was reading through this thread and was about to mention how underrated Richard Dawson’s role in the movie was especially with his game show hosting career.

As for Richard’s penchant for kissing female contestants:

So for those scoring at home…of the ‘Bachman Books’ we’re getting The Long Walk, a new Running Man, and we’ve got Thinner (1996). All we need is an adaptation of Roadwork, and Rage. But I don’t see the latter happening these days, especially since it features a student shooting two teachers in school….too close to home

I caught it there. I enjoyed it! It’s been decades since I read the novella, but this movie kind of struck me as a cross between the novella and the Schwarzenegger film. Still fun and campy but no opera-singing electricity slinging hunters.

The premise is awfully like that of the 1958 story The Prize of Peril by Robert Sheckley, which I happen to have.

Despite being a huge fan of the book, I ended up not going out of my way to watch this movie because of all the bad reviews…

I saw it on Prime Video, started watching it, was enjoying it almost right away, I thought it was great! It was a much better adaptation of the book than the Schwarzenegger movie, it had plenty of thrills, lots of action, and some funny moments. Not sure why it got bad reviews.

Well I enjoyed the movie. I did too.

AlphaPhoenix yep… but in this case the reviews were so bad, I was expecting something entirely different.

The only part I didn’t care for was the end, the book ending was so much better but also so much darker.
