telcodad In their NE ILEC footprint they still are. People forget that VZ has a pretty significant copper footprint in VA, MD, PA, NJ, NY, and MA. Said copper plant is so decrepit and obsolete it’s barely a rounding error on earnings reports.
Verizon’s progress here has slowed a bit, which gets me nervous. They are still working. None of the new areas that just got FiOS plant are open for ordering service yet here. The pace has dropped off from the wintertime, but they have over 1/3rd of the project left to complete. No new updates from the town regarding permit application areas since 3/28.
My fear is that Verizon will change their mind again, perhaps an irrational one.
Much more likely they just bit off more work than they can chew with about 70 central offices with active copper retirement notices in Virginia alone. My CO is so close to being finished that I remain optimistic service will be delivered by end of year, or early next year at the latest.
Work is probably slowed by local town government chaos too, they aren’t actively trying to stop anything, just other political problems that could impact the zoning/permitting department.
