Loved the thing, it’s the perfect beach summer car.
Friends of mine had a little diesel rabbit. It was small (dwarfed by domestic cars on the roads in the late 80s, not the most powerful thing) but very practical and had range despite being probably classed as a sub-compact. The hatchback design on small cars allows one to shove more stuff into it than a sedan version. As professors it was perfect as a city commuter car but they also took it onvacations loaded full of stuff such as a cargo canoe and heavy monochrome PC and monitors (plus kid stuff and other vacation supplies (suffice to say they didn’t teach over the summer break which afforded them much time though they did keep working on research projects. Got good mileage and could sit four adults without feeling totally squished in.
