I'm thinking of jumping into a ROG Ally X. Anyone have one?

Unfortunately I do not own one so I can't really tell you much about it but I am happy to gush about the Steam Deck some if you like?

Uncle_Paul I bought one 3 weeks ago, immediately opened it and stuffed a 4TB 990 Pro w/heatsink and put Bazzite on it and I love it. I tested the previous ROG Ally and liked the hardware but hated Windows on it. I was about to pull the trigger on a Steam Deck but I found out how good Bazzite works, and that you can use a 2280 SSD in the Ally X that I had previously bought on sale but wasn’t installed into anything.

Same... got both the OG Steamdeck (now in use by child #2) and now the OLED Steamdeck. Can't go on enough about. Also IIRC (not completely sure so don't make any purchase decisions based on this) the Ally will be HoloOS compatible at some point. Meaning, if you don't like Windows on handheld, or whatever the Ally ships with, you can install the SteamOS on your own.

I’m actually looking for the Windows OS for better compatibility and mod support. Want a regular browser on it too. I think the Steamdeck OLED has the better screen, but the Ally has better performance. But then it’s an Asus product and they’ve had some issues recently.

My next title after BG3 is Star Wars Outlaws. It’s supposed to really struggle on Steamdeck.

Is there an updated deck due?

Ah, yeah supposedly getting that running on the Deck is not terribly fun, doable but it runs pretty poorly.

Valve hasn't said anything about updated hardware but I imagine they'll eventually do some kind of new more powerful version at some point, would be foolish not to.

Battery and Cooling tech just keeps getting better so I would assume we're just waiting for that to catch up to chip power.

I actually want the Windows OS. It was a selling feature for me. Lets the system be more than just a handheld. I didn't want to try to deal with cross game compatibility hurdles running Linux. My understanding is Brazzite works great if you're into console games.

urbanriot FFVII Remake replay, then straight into Rebirth. It runs Remake buttery smooth on 17w TDP Performance profile, but Rebirth took some FSR tweaking just to get it to run decently on the 25/30w TDP Turbo profile.

Got mine yesterday, got going with BG3 and watched some TV on it. Having been a KBM player for decades, trying to get used to controllers on BG3 is a bit of a slog.

My wife and I had to same issue with controllers when we tried to play splitscreen on the TV.

You can definitely play BG3 with a controller but lord it is not an ideal experience. If you spend the time to customize the hell out of your radials in a way that makes sense it is a little better but still miserable in comparison to KB&M.

I know it's not exactly what you asked about, but I have a Backbone One PlayStation Edition, and I absolutely love it with my Google Pixel 6 Pro.
