He was the one to whom Johnson said “Well, I think we may have lost the south for your lifetime – and mine” on the plane back to the LBJ ranch after the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. To Moyers, “all these years later,” Johnson’s remark seems “maybe … merely a jest, lightly uttered and soon forgotten.” But after Moyers “repeated it publicly just once, it took on a life of its own."
