Now in full disclosure I wasn't a draft dodger nor did I fully understand what was going on over there as the three sources of news everyone had, wasn't broadcasting the full story.
Now my lotto number came and went but I was never called up, but I was convinced by a organization who had a table set up at the Miami Hamfest to get into a niche part of the communications industry, they where seeking people who had a strong knowledge in radio communications and as a plus speak Spanish, I didn't speak Spanish but had a good amount of skills in radio communications.
It turned out one of the things they where looking for was a small company that was able to produce a limited run of 75 to be exact, single axle cargo trailers, they had three requirements, they trailers that would be built and supplied on a single unit fixed priced basis to avoid the requirement of competitive bidding, they had to have attachments, which they designed so they could be air-lifted to a location, plus they had to me made out of fiberglass, which didn't make sense as using fiberglass would increase the weight over using aluminum with a sheet steel roof, which to me conflicted the idea of being air-lifted.
But I was bright enough to not ask questions agreed to set up a company and build the trailers.
It worked out very well, I had worked with a boat building company on Marina Mile who agreed to build the housings as a subcontractor, I built the trailers and installed the supplied communications equipment which consisted of a HF station and a VHF station.
It took us just over a year to build all 75 which was well into the time frame they required and since they where paying a per unit basis I didn't have to dig too deeply into my wallet.
In the end we built 78 units, 3 where retained and equipped with VHF repeaters that we would tow to communications trade shows and offered as temporary on site handheld to handheld FCC licensed communications solution, the idea worked well and all 3 where sold at the first show we attended.
Once those where sold I contracted with Miami Trailer & Equipment to build the trailers and all we did was upfit them with VHF and or UHF repeaters and if required a dispatch position.
We are still building and selling them on a one up, basis built to the customers needs which commonly includes a 30' Will-Burt pneumatic telescopic mast.
