In a move that brings prioritized cellular data connections to a broader swath of its mobile base, Comcast said it is migrating the vast majority of its mobile customers to premium data plans outfitted with QCI 8. QCI 8 (QCI is an abbreviation for Quality of Service Class Identifier) is a quality of service (QoS) designation that’s typically tied into the premium plans of the nation’s Big Three mobile network operators. It’s better than QCI 9, a default, best-effort classification used in relatively basic or entry-level mobile service plans. To keep costs in check, the vast majority of plans offered by mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are at QCI 9.

The upgrade applies to customers on Comcast’s by-the-gig and unlimited plans, including its recently launched Premium Unlimited plan. Premium Unlimited includes perks and enhancements such as 4K video streaming, more hotspot data and twice-a-year phone upgrades. Comcast’s new premium plan is focused on a higher end of the market that has largely been the domain of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Comcast said it is providing the QCI 8 software upgrades at no additional cost, noting that customers will soon be able to get QCI 8 by restarting their smartphones or toggling airplane mode on and off.
