Sparkchaser I don’t have the statistics and I haven’t looked at the power source for what we see here but in the parking lots around here there are a lot of large vehicles, trucks, BIG Suv’s .
Power is going to be a major roadblock for EV’s,, the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) most recent infrastructure report card has de-rated the US energy sector from a C to a D- primarily as a result of the aging transmission and distribution grid (network).
Demand is rising and capacity is not keeping up and if not for behind the meter generation it’s rating would be even lower.
And the cost’s just to bring it up to a “state of good repair” not getting it ahead of future load projections are $9.14 trillion.
So the question is where will all of that money going to come from considering ratepayers are already stretched thin.
And then to add insult to injury a few states have really tossed roadblocks in the world of PV power, California recently introduced NEM-3 in 2023 which mandates all new PV systems will have storage which shall equal the nameplate rating of the PV system and to make things even worse NEM-3 lowered the amount utilities are required to pay for energy sent back to the grid.
This crushed the retrofit PV market in California resulting in a estimated 17,000 lost jobs in the solar industry.
Another strange one I came across is Maryland which restricts Community Solar projects to no more than a 2 MW utility interconnection, one company who had a 17 MW Community Solar project funded had to redesign the project from 4 into seven to get around the 2 MW limitation.
Of course that increased costs and lowered projected profits but the investors hung in and it is not moving forward after that setback.
So yes EV’s are a serious problem, like so many an idea with good intentions but not too well thought out when it comes to filling their tanks.
