I think it has gotten worse. Mainly due to building codes. I read ARC fault breakers can cause issues. So it really comes down to the wiring in your home. If its too old they wont work well, and if its too new it wont work well. Honestly when it comes to power line networking you need to set your expectations low.

Alternatives to this technology would be MOCA, if you have coax already ran. Or you might look in to some kind of WiFi Mesh system.

I’ve no experience with powerline networking but do recall that at one time there was some sort of bridge that ran between the busses in the circuit breaker panel that was supposed to help. I’ve always wondered how they did that without creating a dead short.

If you have Coax, MoCA works really well for me. I have 4 Motorola gigabit MoCA adapters. The house was wired with home run topology(?), each cable outlet has its own cable running to a common point in the basement. I recently did a speed test using iPerf3 and it ran 870 - 930 mb./sec. TCP/IP and has been absolutely reliable. It’s difficult to find 1 gb. MoCA adapters, they’re all 2.5 gb. Ethernet for devices that don’t move, wifi for devices that do.

I’ve been using 1 Gbps adapters for almost a decade now and I’m getting probably around 760 ~ 800 Mbps with them. I bought four of these D-Link units ages ago and they were ‘okay’ at around 450 Mbps and then I bought a single unit of a newer generation and somehow that magically upgraded all the old ones its in operation to the 760 Mbps. No issues streaming HD content and my devices are on different circuits. I have no idea how it all works but it’s been great for me.

Yes, there are “Powerline Phase Couplers” that install in an electrical panel that allow the Powerline signals to pass from one phase to another. They use capacitors to pass the high frequency signal without causing a short at the lower 60 Hz line frequency.

I have been using some TP-Link AV-2000 Power line adapters for a number of years. I do not come close to the advertised 2GB speed, but I get 142 Mbps down, 162 Mbps up, 9ms ping, 0 jitter on OpenSpeedTest 2.1.

Other than their speed note, I do not agree with the TechReviewer article. These are rock solid and as noted, reasonable ping and jitter values. I moved these to different circuits and sides of the breaker box with no issues and negligible performance impact. YMMV

I have tried a number of these over the years (Netgear, D-Link< Comtrend), and these are the fastest and most reliable, especially compared to the wireless bridge it replaced. OK, 150 Mbps is not real fast, but I had some that were in the 20-40 Mbps rage (probably still do)

Looking through my notes, I have some links for Comtrend (PG 9172 & 9182PT) and Zyzel (PLA6456), as well as D-Link W611AV_A1. All of this was 4-5 years ago. I recall the first 2 having more extensive config, but at this point DNR details.

I also looked a MoCa at they time. It promised faster speeds, but the hardware was much more and I was not up for the investment for the particular application. I did do some work for a friend at one point who had Verizon FIOS, and they had installed MoCa for the PCs, but I did no speed testing.

Exactly what product are you using (make\model\version) and are you able to test using OpenSpeedTest.

If your not familiar with this its real easy. Use option 3 on the above link. Download and run. There is NO setup. It starts a server and gives you an IPO. go to another PC, open the browser and enter the IP and port for the server. Literally that easy.

RangerZ a friend at one point who had Verizon FIOS, and they had installed MoCa for the PCs, but I did no speed testing.

FIOS install here. MoCa works great. Never had a problem. I’ve added the MoCa drops myself.

I’d have to yank them off the wall which always risks de-synching them to get the models and I have at least 4 different models but at least the DHP-540 from as far back as 2011 and buying newer units upgraded the older ones’ speeds. As I wrote, 760 Mbps, don’t need to run a test and no issues locally streaming HD content on my network through KODI.
