It’s the weekend. I survived last night’s thunderstorms. This morning’s news says there are 275,000 power outages in the Philadelphia area. There is also a lot of tree damage. I consider myself lucky, as I can hear at least one home that has a generator running. I’m in a wooded area and have have lots of trees on the back of my property. I see a few branches on the ground, but nothing near my house.

telcodad With older houses up here it’s not too bad to add central A/C if it already has Forced Hot-air heating.

I’ve got a 1930’s home. Hot air heat… through the grate in the living room floor that used to have the coal furnace under it! There is no way to run ductwork to the 2nd floor without boxing it in through the 1st. Thought about an air handler in the attic… but do not want a furnace up there. What heat I get in the 2nd floor in the winter… comes via convection up the stairs. When I had a number of cats, sleeping in winter wasn’t too bad…

wdunwoody With a mini split you don’t need ducting. All plumbing is external to the house. But you may need a 200 amp service.

Dks01 …I’ve read a lot more about mini-splits in the past several days. Some are cool AND heat… and I only need just a touch more heat in winter. Hmmm. Electrical service here will not be an issue. Thanks!

wdunwoody Ours does both. The controller has an Auto setting that keeps the place at a set temperature and switches between heat and cooling as needed. We have 100 amp service, but we don’t use the cottage in winter.
