Last Thursday I had fiber installed in my place after they completed construction to bring it to my area a little while ago, and it’s mostly been great, have the 2Gbps plan, with a Humax BGW320-500 fiber modem, which I’m running in IP Passthrough (All packet filtering and firewall settings disabled) mode w/ a Ubiquiti home network setup. All that’s good, but for some reason I’m experiencing some really bizarre behavior with YouTube in particular.
For whatever reason, whenever I watch an on-demand video on YouTube that is set to 1080p quality or higher, I get tons of buffering/freezes. The stats for nerds dialog window reports a connection speed of pretty much exactly 1.8Mbps every time when this is happening, so it seems like it’s being artificially throttled. However, interestingly, if I set the video quality to 720p or below, the connection speed with YouTube according to stats for nerds is perfectly fine, usually between 80-200Mbps. Strangely, live 1080p YouTube streams are also fine. I’ve ensured that AT&T Active Armor is disabled in the app, so it’s not that either. The issue also happens when connected hardwired directly to the BGW320, so it’s not an issue with my Ubiquiti setup.
Running a VPN while on the AT&T fiber connection, or connecting through my (still active) cable internet connection also get’s around the 1.8Mbps issue, which also points to some kind of throttling.
Any ideas? Kind of at my whit’s end at the moment. I have one of the WAS-110 SFP modules on order, with the plan to bypass the modem altogether, so if the modem is the issue, that will hopefully resolve it, but in the meantime I was curious if anyone else had seen this before or had any ideas?
