The Toronto Argonauts, the defending Grey Cup champs, may be in for a tough go this year .. they’ve lost their first two games. Starting QB Chad Kelly is still recovering from his broken leg in last year’s Eastern Conference final. The Argos lost 7 players from last year’s starting defense. The Argos decided to go younger at running back this year. Watching previous Argo running backs A. J. Ouellette & Ka’Deem Carey suiting up for the Roughriders last night made one question the Argos decision. A.J. is a beast !!

CFL standings after Week 16. I’m using the CFL website standings, but I disagree about the BC/WPG tiebreaker. My reading of the CFL’s tiebreaker rules at https://www.cfl.ca/standings-tiebreaker-rules/ would have Winnipeg in 3rd, and BC in 4th. In any case, if the season ended today, BC and Winnipeg woukd split West 3rd and crossover East 3rd between them. Ottawa, Toronto, and Edmonton would be out of the playoffs. It’s already looking pretty grim ffor the 3 of them.

An ego-boost for me. The CFL standings website has switched to Winnipeg in 3rd and BC in 4th (taking the crossover playoff slot). Here are the revised standings.

I agree with moving the posts, but not sure about the rest. Longer field always kept the CFL more passing when combined with 3 downs.

WalterDnes IMHO They want to merge with the NFL eventually, doing these changes allows a gradual transition and provides a common point of reference which would ease the transition. As with the NHL the US would gain more teams at the expense of ours, however for the former owners it would probably be very profitable for them when they sell out.

Not much of a viewer of the game and the changes make me even less inclined to watch so the plan is apparently working; it’s just a matter of time before the Toronto Argonauts set sail to the land of gold leaf, golden dome, gold card & golden fleecing.

I prefer it over NFL for more passing. Running is dull IMO. Not that I watch either very much.

The wider Canadian field impacts play more than field length.

Keeping 3 down football is the absolute must to preserve our version.

And where exactly will they play? The smallest NFL stadium is Soldier Field in Chicago at 61,500. “The Big Owe” in Montreal is the only Canadian stadium that meets that at 66,308. And do you really want to play there in December and January? There are no 60,000+ fully enclosed domed stadiums in Canada.

Toronto’s BMO Field CFL capacity is 25,000. After 8 home games, the Argonauts are averaging 14,516 fans per game in 2025. And Toronto is approx 90 km from Buffalo “as the crow flies”, which would probably run afoul of franchise territorial exclusivity.

WalterDnes Mostly in the US, Canada can’t support that many NFL teams, they either move or get bought out. Sure, Toronto is screwed but they have an NBA team, NHL and a MLB franchises so football fans will have to move. Also those are all good points of why Quebec would be able to keep their team provided the city province and feds build a shiney new building to appease the owner. The prairies likely could support one team, a merger of the fan base for Manitoba and Sask. would give CFL sized numbers, Alberta could perhaps keep one team as well. BC’s Lions have a good fan base so it might live for a bit.

Bottom line if they keep americanizing the game there is no reason for a CFL league to exist at all.

BC beats Toronto. Hamilton is now guaranteed an East Division playoff spot, no worse than 2nd. Hamilton has 18 points. Toronto, with 10 points and 3 games left, can only get to 16. Ottawa, with 8 points and 4 games left, can only get to 16.

Toronto and Ottawa aren’t officially eliminated yet, but have to catch at least two of BC/WPG/EDM to avoid being ousted by crossover.

Saskatchewan and Hamilton are guaranteed playoff slots. Toronto and Ottawa are effectively, even though not officially, eliminated. They’d have to win all their remaining games, and hope 2 of CGY/WPG/BC lose all their remaining games.

Saskatchewan has defeated Ottawa tonight 20 to 13. Ottawa is now officially eliminated. Even it wins all 3 remaining games, Ottawa gets at most 14 points. Montreal has 16 points, so Ottawa can’t catch them for 2nd place. There are 4 teams in the West with 16 or more points. So Ottawa would be eliminated by crossover.

Hamilton is in Toronto tomorrow afternoon, and even a tie would officially eliminate Toronto.

And one more thing; Montreal defeated Toronto in Week 1 and week 7 and week 16. If Toronto wins its 3 remaining games and Montreal loses its 3 remaining games. the Alouettes take 2nd place via tiebreaker. There are now 3 teams officially in the playoffs; Saskatchewan, Hamilton, and Montreal. Ottawa is officially out.

Toronto’s loss today knocks them out of the playoffs. Assuming they win their remaning 2 games, they’ll end up with 14 points. Hamilton and Montreal have 20 and 16. So Toronto can do no better than 3rd in the East. But there are already 4 clubs in the West with 16 or more points, so Toronto gets knocked out by “crossover”.

BC’s win tonight guarantees them at worst a 4th-place tie with Edmonton. Having already beaten Edmonton twice, BC will get the tiebreaker for at worst the crossover into the East 3rd slot.
