Enforcement of de minimis tariffs

Does anyone seen or heard anything about the enforcement of de minimis tariffs? For one, how is that being done?

I want to buy a few blue pills (those are STM32F103C8T6 based blue pills, *not* the Pfizer based pills! 😉 ) and an S7 1215C PLC,.

Blue pills are cheap so tariffs wouldn’t matter much with them, but tariffs on the PLC can be significant.

I know the theory, but I would like to know how it works in *practice*.

Doesn’t customs just go by the ‘declared value’ on the attached customs form?

And if duty is due, they hold your package until you pay – or so I understand.

I have a guitar bridge coming from Sweden in the mail. I wonder if I will see a charge? This is a rare item for a somewhat rare guitar.

No, it does *NOT* answer the question I asked. What I want to know how exactly this is implemented (or “in practice”) as I’ve already noted it before.

I could get a bill attached to a package payable within a week or two (possible, or even likely with low value items), or I could get a bill by mail, and my package would be released after payment – this would be more likely with higher value packages.

I had a order for reading glasses from Amazon that was to come from China. It took place right when the tarrif stuff kicked up. I never got them.

I pray this bridge gets here, he’s my only source for one. And the kludge on the guitar right now is driving me nutso.

real_aurgathor And? This the reality we deal with all time. I ordered some uniform shirts from the US. I had to pay in US dollars. I was charged with HST, duty and the usurious UPS brokerage fee. The bill was doubled.

If you want to know how these whiplash duties will be applied, call your local ICE office. I’ll bet they can’t answer your question any better than any internet forum. That is, if there is anyone even in the office to answer the phone.

From a few seconds googling (for whatever that’s worth) it seems that there are different forms to be filled in if you’re claiming the de minimis exemption. One might guess (for whatever that’s worth) that if the de minimus form gives a value that is too large for today’s limit, it will be rejected at the border.
