Recently, Cartoon Network has seen its viewership drop. DirecTV did not include it in its new $34.99 entertainment package but did include Adult Swim. A well trodden way to (try to) eliminate the unsustainable debt that WBD assumed/acquired by assigning it to the “bad bank” (the cable networks). Zaslav is trying for his Hail Mary play to obtain respect in the industry. It might work. It might not.

This news comes as DIRECTV recently also did not add Cartoon Network to its cheaper entertainment only package. Instead they only offer Adult Swim and the channel is blank when Cartoon Network is on…..

It seems if you don’t need some of the extra channels in the Ultimate Tier, could you move to a lower tier and then add the S&E package, and end up with a lower bill?

In some cases it is possible, and one should look into the detailed rates and content offered for each tier and package, but because of the way Comcast adds discounts to the tier groups one does not always end up with a lower bill depending on the add-on packages you need for your particular channels.

Yeah, it looks like moving from the “Ultimate” tier (185+ channels) to the “Popular” tier (125+ channels) woukld save about $20/month and adding the “More Sports and Entertainment” package would cost $9.95/month: https://www.xfinity.com/learn/digital-cable-tv/sports/more-sports-entertainment-package

However, the Cord Cutters News article says that Comcast "is offering ** “a promotional discount for the first three months** of the add-on package to ease the transition” so I don’t know what that may save you.

Given that Max (with ads) is $9.99/mo, it is not clear that one may not do better content wise by subscribing to Max itself and watching your Cartoon Network shows (along with other content) on Max streaming (and if the primary reason you had Ultimate rather than Popular was just the Cartoon Network, you might be able to downgrade to Popular and actually save money).

CommunityMember Or you could A) Drop down to the lowest tier Or B) Cut cable all together and fill in the gaps with streaming. We are fortunate to live close enough to the broadcast towers to get like 50 is channels OTA. Currently we have the Hulu, Disney , Max bundle. It’s like $16.99 w/ ads of course. But in my opinion 3 streaming services under $20 is pretty fucking good. I know for a fact I get my monies worth out of every streaming service. My old man used 716 Gigs of data in one month just streaming.

Also should mention there is a lot of free streaming content out there as well. Pluto TV for example. But it all comes down to how bad you want to save money vs just paying for convenience. I know some people like to “Channel Surf” and thats something you cant really do on streaming.

so, Do they reduce the core price by $9.95? or at least $5? This inflationary move doesn’t really have cost justification, most of the content is already in the can (reruns and redits of existing art)
I’m not against content being divided to a more ala carté pricing but the pricing bumps aggravates the main reason for cord cutting… their pricing is way too high.

Tshirt I ended up canceling Xfinity TV service because of this. Wasn’t too keen on paying $10 to keep watching the same channel that used to be on the Expanded Basic tier before they moved it up to Digital Preferred/Ultimate TV

The More Sports & Entertainment package has nothing else I’m interested in, so it would’ve been money down the drain.
