recording phone calls

My old cell phone had a setting to record calls in the phone app but my new phone doesn’t.
It’s legal in Canada and it’s a phone meant for the Canadian market so do you know why?

iPhones and Android both have it built in, but may not be available based on carrier or model of phone. Pixels for example do not support it, but Google provides instructions how to do it: https://support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/9803950?

Except for some 5G frequency bands, cellphones meant for the Canadian or US markets are pretty much the same.

Perhaps the manufacturers are taking the easy route—not putting in a particular feature for the Canadian market that most consumers don’t care about anyway.

As well—even across the USA, laws differ.

Most states have “one party consent” same as Canada, but some states (such as California and Illinois) require the consent of everyone on the call.

It depends. Aspects that can come into play are what the law is in the jurisdiction where the person doing the recording is. The federal rule is one-party consent.

I had to have my lawyers figure this out for my businesses several years ago, because all of our calls are recorded.

I don’t understand why they don’t have the feature and people who own the phones can break the law if they want.
To me, it is like Canadian Tire selling illegal (not clear) license plate holders.
They have a warning on them they might be illegal in your jurisdiction.

Reminds me of the MS world, for every error message there are many, often contradictory posts and sites offering advice on how to clear it but none of it applies anymore because MS has altered the feature or system such that theses fixes no longer work. The only constant advice is re-install the OS which is just a silly, useless answer.
