Brian Wilson, Beach Boys visionary leader and summer’s poet laureate, dies at 82

Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys’ visionary and fragile leader whose genius for melody, arrangements and wide-eyed self-expression inspired Good Vibrations, California Girls, God Only Knows, I Get Around among dozens of other summertime anthems, and made him one of the world’s most influential songwriters and recording artists, has died at 82.

In the summer of 1963 a scared 11 and ½ year old kid in Winnipeg worked up the courage to pick up the phone and call a local radio station request line for the first time. The song i requested was “Surfin USA” by the Beachboys. I feel old.

Dennis Wilson: the only surfer in The Beach Boys. The middle brother of bandmates Brian and Carl Wilson, he was the group’s originally drummer and tragically drowned in 1983 at the age of 39. See: Dennis Wilson.

Dennis Wilson was the only member of The Beach Boys who actually surfed. The surfing spirit of the famous US band was in the heart of Dennis Wilson.

Back in 2003, Paul McCartney declared that one of Brian Wilson’s songs stands above the rest, calling it the “greatest song ever written.”

The song is God Only Knows.

“It’s one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it,” McCartney reportedly said. “It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done and shows the genius of Brian.”

I agree with Macca - it is sublime.

For the record (ha!), as a teenager, I thought the Beach Boys were hopelessly old-fashioned with their clean-cut all-American look and “teen culture” songs. It wasn’t until some time later I recognized the art behind it.

Ironically, Secretary of the Interior James Watt tried to ban them from July 4 celebrations in 1983.

BIG mistake.

Turned out Nancy Reagan was a BIG fan. 😃
