AT&T said it has extended its fiber network to more than 30 million locations ahead of schedule. AT&T’s new plan is to reach 60 million locations with fiber by the end of 2030.

…. AT&T reached the 30 million milestone about a half a year ahead of schedule; the telco originally expected to reach it by the end of 2025.

AT&T will now pursue its longer-term goal of 60 million fiber locations by 2030. AT&T intends to reach that goal via a mix of approaches, including its ongoing in-footprint buildout, the Gigapower joint venture with BlackRock focused on fiber builds outside of AT&T’s traditional wireline footprint, open access deals with a handful of partners and AT&T’s proposed acquisition of Lumen’s Mass Markets fiber business. ,,,,

The last few years have been crazy here with neighborhoods all around me being trenched and fiber installed. They finally got to mine early this year and my fiber service has been great.

Good job, but it’s not enough. AT&T shouldn’t leave people in more rural areas without good access. They should pull fiber to every location that has copper service. Get it done, AT&T!

My Att fiber makes one year next month they where very aggressive here last year had digging and running fiber.

They should, but most likely won’t. Rural areas will probably get 5G fixed wireless instead.

California is currently blocking them from shutting down copper until they replace it with something, either fiber or wireless.

There’s some places with no wireless coverage at all, and AT&T DSL is the only option other than satellite.

There’s also some remote areas where even their DSL doesn’t have fiber backhaul. In Yosemite National Park, everything (cell towers, DSL, POTS, T1) is carried over microwave dishes out of the park, because the NPS refuses to let AT&T run fiber into the park. So everyone is stuck with 10Mb DSL there, or Starlink.

Man-of-Leisure There are many areas in the California mountains beside Yosemite where companies are not allowed to run any additional cables on the poles due to restrictions on the pole owners by CPUC. The poles either have to be upgraded to larger poles or all the aerial utilities have to be run underground. Either option tends to add large costs and years to the projects.

Billions in losses due to wildfires caused by multiple failures of aerial power lines will do that.

I do find it odd since the NPS recently approved fiber burial in Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and the Grand Canyon.

They generally do it right next to the main road, so it doesn’t really disturb anything.

If the CPUC wants AT&T to run fiber or upgrade their DSL, I’m sure they’ll figure out a solution in these areas.

Many people have already given up and switched to Starlink (including in Yosemite) but that’s a lot more expensive.
