I was stopped by the police on the street several years ago. They were looking for someone for whom I fit the description. I was detained long enough to show them my drivers license and went along my way. No harm no foul.

I remember several instances of local yokel cops being given arrest quotas. It usually ended up with people being pulled over for one MPH over limit, and citing falsely. (It’s the cop’s word against the out of town driver) Mayors courts added to the circus by ignoring state required court procedures and issuing fines and penalties in excess of the infractions.

In case you don’t know, the “you look like someone we’re looking for” is often a boiler-plate excuse by the police to stop people.

My brother was brought in by the RCMP once for being a teenage boy in Nova Scotia. We were visiting family there and there had been a break out at the local juvenile facility.

Last I checked, there was no law requiring an American to do so. What happen if you have no such id on you?

If you were just asked to show ID, that was not “detainment” in the legal sense of being in some sort of custody.

Sounds like a LITTLE more went on here, especially if they needed to verify with multiple people.

Driving a vehicle on a public road does require a license and possibly other items, but, being on a public street generally do not.

I had my home stormed by cops who were looking for someone with my same name, including the middle name. They barged in illegally as they didn’t have a warrant. It was scary. It took me an hour to convince them that guy wasn’t me. I’ve had 2 other incidents with process servers insisting he was me.

What bothers me is how cops break the law frequently, like how they barged into my apartment without a warrant and cuffed me when I wasn’t even the right person.

I’ve also had cops acknowledge that I committed no crime when living elsewhere and still too me in because “they didn’t like me”.

Ice is making a LOT of “mistakes” right now.

That’s not the issue here—

Asking for your constitutional rights as a REGULAR citizen (or even a lawful permanent resident) has nothing to do with the so-called “sovereign citizen” movement.

But yes, it IS true that in a Federal building (where this supposedly happened), ID can be asked for, and in fact these days (in a Federal building) is supposed to be required. That’s why this screwy event made news to begin with.

I accept that when driving, I am expected to have documents showing I am entitled to drive and that the vehicle is registered, inspected, and insured.

But when I am walking on the street, there is no such requirement. And indeed, I sometimes don’t carry my wallet if I won’t need it.
