I don’t think I’ve noticed right handed people ever wrap their hand around. But, of course, everybody writes differently.
Dks01 My high school was new. There were always two or three sinister desks in each classroom where they were used. In university, also a new build, the whole left side of the lecture theatres had sinister seating. Older schools would have beaten the habit out.
I think some of the newer buildings at the university had left handed seats. Although, I think most of the newest stuff favoured stadium style seating with long tables instead. Obviously, the trend was to supporting tables with outlets for laptops.
GrumpyCanadian n my case, I write mostly level with the current line, rather than wrapped over (as with Obama). I have also known a few lefties who take pains to keep their hand below the line they are writing, but I always found that it negatively affected the legibility, whether cursive or printed, and took a toll on their speed, even compared to my slow writing.
I think I’m closer to Obama’s style. He’s a pretty extreme example. I always have trouble writing on notepads that have the coils on top.
GrumpyCanadian I don’t understand, though; I have been told that I have “beautiful handwriting” by some, while I also had one graduate student looking to move into teaching complain that he was almost unable to read what I wrote. I knew he disliked me, but that criticism coming from someone who produced the sort of chicken-scratch that he did seemed a bit rich.
I think I can write neatly if I take the time. But it can get really bad too.
I think we’re going to need a handwriting comparison thread, where we all print and write ‘The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’.
