1Gbps GPON not hitting 940Mbps

For the first time that I can ever remember while having At&t fiber, I’m not maxing out at 940Mbps to at&t speed test servers. I’ve been down around 850Mbps regularly today. I guess congestion must be starting to creep into my area.

Anyone else seeing slightly lower than normal speeds lately?

If it’s only GPON, and not XGS-PON, it’s probably congestion. Keep in mind, you’re sharing 2.4 Gbps down (and only 1.2 Gbps up) with up to 31 other subscribers. Even if the downstream isn’t congesting, it’s possible that you’re dropping some TCP ACKs on the upstream if it is congested.

Personally, I wouldn’t fret about a ~90 Mbps loss on a 1 Gbps plan. Especially if it’s only during peak times. But the reality is that as more people take fiber over whatever your other local options are (assuming cable/HFC and maybe FWA), AT&T will need to continue upgrading GPON builds to XGS-PON to accommodate subscriber growth.

xpxp2002 my area also has XGSPON for a couple years now and all new customers over that time have been added to XGSPON. The GPON side has been losing subscribers for over 2 years. The congestion would have to be just upstream from the GPON/XGSPON first step. Some node in the at&t network getting choked.

badtlc4 While possible, it’s less likely. I’d hinge my bets on last mile congestion. That’s simply where the smallest bottleneck is.

If you temporarily upgrade to 2 Gbps, your line will be flagged to be moved to an XGS-PON splitter. If you then downgrade back to 1 Gbps, you’ll be left there.

You can also try opening a ticket with AT&T and ask them to have a field dispatch move you to the XGS-PON splitter because you’re seeing congestion and slow downs below the advertised speeds, if you want to avoid any billing changes. YMMV if they will do it.

badtlc4 I am seeing the biggest drop in upload speed. My download used to be in the low 900’s and has dropped to the mid 800’s but my upload speed used to max out in the mid 900’s but now seems to be maxed at 2.0. Other servers seem (non AT&T) seem to off MUCH higher upload speeds. I am gigabit fiber and running wired connections.

doechsli Interesting data point. Seems the more I poke around there is some segment of the AT&T network out there with issues. I haven’t figured out exactly where, though. I know I see the issue whether i’m being routed through STL or Dallas.

EDIT: Doing more testing, if I hop off the at&t network here in Kansas City, speeds are doing fine. If I go east on at&t’s network, i’m seeing speeds as low as 400/60 and if I go west i’m seeing about 500/400. They are definitely having network issues.

Not sure if it matters but I’m on a 2G plan. Just ran speed tests via my gateway and showing over 2400 both directions. Arkansas.

Jbob The gateway speed tests are showing fine for me too but the real speedtests are not.

badtlc4 So what is the difference between a “real” speed test and one performed my the Gateway itself? If your local area is experiencing congestion wouldn’t that show on any speed test? Honest question.

I am not sure where the Gateway speed test sends it’s packets but assume it’s always to an AT&T designated site/facility, whether it’s local or not.

I also performed a speed test via my Asus router, set to auto, with a local fiber company it got over 2300/2300.

If you’re performing a speed test that jumps across networks/peering points how can you be sure that isn’t the cause?

at&t still having network issues. If I get off at my local PEX here in KC, I can hit servers at a full 940Mbps up/down. Anywhere on the at&t network further away (St Louis, Chicago, Dallas, NYC, LA, Seattle) the best I can do is 500Mbps download speeds.

I know that at&t customer service will be no help with this. Any suggestions on if there is anyone I can alert so they can be aware?
