Somewhat-Reticent We never did figure that one out. We tried our best to make sure it never got to that point by combing thoroughly and often. Small tangles could usually be gently teased out with a comb, otherwise we’d just use blunt-tipped pet scissors to remove the tangle, sometimes having to resort to the electric clippers or smaller battery trimmer (they hated those).
One tool that was useful for periodic maintenance was the Furminator. One guy didn’t like that either, but it kept him from needing many clipping sessions, and made his grooming work easier (and we were rewarded with fewer furballs). I admit that a few times, we still had to resort to a “lion cut” at the grooming shop, because he got too stuck, but he didn’t like that, and we didn’t either (expensive, and some pets have gone home from the groomers with injuries; a few even ended up being fatal).
