I was emptying the trash cans under the register last night and the head cashier told me to open my register back up and I told I refused to do so until I went in back and washed my hands. There was no way I was going to touch trash and then put my hands on customers food. I work in a small suburb where you don’t know who your customer could be. It could be the local health inspector just doing their grocery shopping or someone from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, again doing their grocery shopping. They see a health violation while shopping they could schedule an inspection for the following Monday morning unannounced and then the best that can happen is they can fine the store or the worst that can happen is the entire store gets shut down depending on the violations found. I believe in compliance with all food safety standards and regulatory standards. I will refuse to perform any task that is illegal or violates safety standards. I have a pretty good manager who stands by me and if someone gets spoken to it will be the head cashier. I don’t think customers want to see my hands on trash and then me touching their food either.
