We are halfway up the SE side of 2nd mountain south of I40 Exit 20, Purchase Knob. That mountain peak is the SE corner of Smokey Mts Natl Park. About 8 miles south of I40 Exit 20, off US 276. Helene gave us 14.75” of rain in a 2 day period. We thought we didn’t have an issue, but this spring part of the hillside of our front yard “Slipped” Onto the mountain roadway in front of house. We lucked out, as we know people who lost most of the roads leading up to their houses, and there are still houses in valley that lost the bridges over creeks separating house from roads. Asheville really got hammered. Some areas just re-opened, and a couple won’t ever. 1925 was worst Ashville storm on record, and Helene was 19’ above that! We’ve been monitoring the repair as we occasionally drive to Chicagoland. Last time it was via the Cherokee Nation’s roads over the mountains in the rain & fog
I could understand if we lived in Florida, but 20 miles from Tennessee in western NC….?
