Hackers Leak 86 Million AT&T Records with Decrypted SSNs

Hackers have leaked what they claim is AT&T’s database which was reportedly stolen by the ShinyHunters group in April 2024 after they exploited major security flaws in the Snowflake cloud data platform.

The exposed information includes full names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses and 43,989,219 Social Security Numbers (SSNs). Hackread.com reports that the data, originally encrypted, has been fully decrypted by the threat actors, meaning that SSNs and dates of birth are now circulating in plain text.

It’s complicated.

A lot of the MVNO use specialized back-end companies to do their administration.

Generically these are called Mobile Virtual Network Aggregators and Mobile Virtual Network Enablers (MVNA and MVNE).

Plintron is one such, I believe they did (or still do) a LOT of back end not just for independent MVNO such as Red Pocket, but also for some T-Mobile projects and others.

AFAIK (could be wrong!) the companies such as Red Pocket do use the back-end folks such as Plintron to largely manage their customer accounts.

But some MVNO companies are fully OWNED by the majors—for example, AT&T bought Cricket in 2014—so they are possibly more integrated.

… The number of stolen records seems a closer fit to the 2021 theft. But until AT&T lets us know which previously disclosed data breach — if any — is linked to this latest customer info dump, we won’t know for sure. Regardless, if you’re an AT&T customer, it’s a good idea to closely monitor your credit and keep an eye out for any indication of fraud or identity theft. …
