why? Is it simply because the styles are similar, or is it because the stories are actually connected and then you need to go back to the first one to really get a better understanding of the second one?
Yes, and also yes. But not as a requirement, only to enhance enjoyment. It’s more of a mood than a necessity.
The first movie explained why one of the brothers was the way he was and queued up two independent stories to intersect that you wanted to see them intersect. The sequel basically starts with that as a premise and it works well while expanding on the people in the background that were affecting the first movie.
Both movies have the same writer and the same director which enhances that stylistic feeling, watching both together is almost like watching a miniseries.
I hope they make a third.
