New Treatment for Aggressive Breast Cancer Achieves Astonishing 100% Survival Rate

A new pre-surgery treatment strategy for inherited breast cancer has achieved an astonishing 100% survival rate, thanks to a simple yet powerful timing tweak.

A promising new treatment is offering fresh hope for patients with aggressive, inherited breast cancers. In a recent clinical trial led by Cambridge researchers, every patient who received a combination of chemotherapy and a targeted cancer drug before surgery survived the crucial three-year period following treatment.

Published in Nature Communications, the study suggests this could become the most effective therapy yet for early-stage breast cancer linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations.

I’ll have to check into this. My mom had breast cancer several years ago and we just learned that it may have returned (95% probability). I don’t know yet what her oncologist will recommend, we have an appointment Jun 10. She is 87 years old and I don’t think she’ll want to do chemo/radiation again. I also don’t if it is linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2, I don’t think so.

Biotechnology company Anixa Biosciences, Inc. announced earlier this month that its breast cancer vaccine, which is being designed with the help of the Cleveland Clinic, has completed phase one of its clinical testing. It will be moving forward to the next stages of development, and if all goes to plan, doctors may soon be able to stop cancerous tumors from forming.

“The vaccine is designed to mobilize the patient’s immune system to find, recognize, and destroy breast cancer cells for primary prevention,” Amit Kumar, Ph.D, CEO of Anixa Biosciences, Inc., tells Vogue. “If a patient is vaccinated and [their] immune system is trained to destroy the cancer cells when the cancer appears, the vaccinated immune system will destroy the cells before they can grow into a cell tumor.”
