More seriously, I think we need a broader discussion about this, rather than just letting the tech companies do whatever they think they want, and worrying about the consequences later. In particular:
- What are we getting out of this?
- What is the cost of the above?
- Is it worth it for anyone, given the staggering amounts of electricity required?
- What is the “killer application”?
- Who really benefits? If this is really something so important for the future, can we really trust its development exclusively to private, for-profit corporations?
