In an interesting development, an Ontario judge has approved a $500 million settlement in the Loblaws bread price-fixing case. KingB71 And that is the problem, big company screwed over millions, turns it into a conspiracy among grocers, decides to come clean (for legal immunity) and pays out a small amount making it all go away. Consumers don’t have alternative choices in the places they shop or the brand of bread they can buy. The government failed, it continues to fail when it comes to consumer protections. People should be mad.

digitalfutur Woot, that is nearly 25 ¾ litres of regular unleaded based on today’s gas price. The actual mileage we might get on this “refund” varies but it’s still a pathetic sham.

In reality they overcharged bread by a $1.50 per loaf, so if one bought a loaf a week over that period the overcharge is $1,170 (not accounting for leap years). The more you bought, the more you overpaid yet the paltry payout is the same and pittance to the offending overcharge.

Yes, this is really just an appeasement; they made enough profit that this is a drop.

Yeah in the long run its a pretty sticky wicket as one of my co-workers and I agreed as we talked about it - the issue is we consumers don’t have proof of purchase - so some people during the time period may have bought none of the products - they may be gluten free diets, they may not like the brands of breads involved, or they just might not be bread users. Other folks may buy 2 loafs a week of white and brown or texas toast and rye or whatever - and have overpaid well into the 4 figures during the timeframe. It wouldn’t be right to just give a blanket “settlement” of $1000 to every household in the country - 1 - some households didn’t exist during the timeframe, the residents were children, immigrants, or were otherwise not involved in product purchases during the timeframe. 2 - Others may not have bought any of the products during the timeframe. Others may have bought them but only rarely (I would say that would have been my family during that timeframe - we maybe bought 1 bread purchase a month or less that would have had the overpricing - its only the last 2-3 years we’re now buying a loaf of bread every week - we used to strictly use local deli rolls and my wife usually baked our own bread while she was not working and the offspring were young). and 3 - some people may have primarily bought from competitors that weren’t involved in the scheme. On the other hand some households may have been VERY unfairly overpriced and out large sums of cash over the whole time period – but they have no way to prove it. No one keeps the last 15-20 years of grocery receipts.
