Seeking Advice

I’m trying to decide what to use software wise for my home server. Its been many many years since i’ve dabled with server software, but i’ve used old versions of windows servers and truenas. My current employer has a proxmox server that a previous IT guy setup for our small office. I know enough of proxmox, learning on my own, to just keep our server running as it runs our file server, email server, spamfilter, and website.

For my home server i want to try and do these things with it:
Local filesever
Plex server
Mincraft server
Project Zomboid server (if i can)
Backup fileserver for my work office

What would be everyones suggestion on what to try? Also curious what software to use for the Backup fileserver for my office. I want it to run each night and backup just the files that have been changed or new for the day.

Proxmox is a great solution for what you’re wanting to do and since you have some familiarity with it, that should help go a long way. I use Proxmox at home for Adguard, NAS, Docker, internal website, Home Assistant and a few more things. I just use the tiny micro computers from a few generations back and run three of them in a cluster. Also have another one for Proxmox Backup Server that automatically backs up everything every night. If one of them crashed out for whatever reason, they have shared storage using CEPH that will just move it to another server automatically. I learned all of it with YouTube and just tinkering with it.

There’s also some Proxmox scripts that you literally just paste in the code and it will set up whatever you’re looking for.

InstaGator Do you host any cloud storage services on your network, and if so, may I ask what do you use?

I have a VM (running in Proxmox) for a Network Attached storage. I have triedNextCloud in the past but it was complete overkill for what I wanted with a NAS. I ended up going with Open Media Vault because it’s very light weight as a VM.

I also use TailScale if I ever need to use anything at home. I can just use the app from my phone to “turm it on” and I’m basically on my on LAN at home.
