An article published Saturday repeats that the Federal Court of Appeal has cleared the way for the CFIA-ordered cull to go ahead, but presents the differing views of animal rights activists, who say the cull should be stopped, and virologists, who appear to largely agree with the CFIA and international bodies.
An important detail, one virologist mentioned, is that older ostriches — like those at the Universal farm — do not tend to show severe symptoms, while still harbouring and potentially spreading the infection, both between ostriches on the farm and other birds. This is particularly important, since the fenced area of the farm does not prevent entry or exit of other wildlife.
The spokesperson for the farm did her teary routine on the evening news on Saturday, selling the same old song. What she never shares is the fact that they failed to report the deaths or infection, allegedly hid or buried the corpses, etc. Hardly reputable behaviour, and while they continue this nonsense, other farmers are being deprived of their livelihoods, with countries refusing to import their poultry.
As always, the CFIA intends to go ahead with the task at hand, refusing to divulge any details, and noting that the public will not be advised beforehand. Considering the tactics of the farm and their supporters, that’s probably a wise decision.
