AMDUSER Locally, most restaurants are charging about 4% for using cards - debit or credit. Yet, some of those same restaurants have increased the price while also decreasing the portion / size.
Around here it seems to be around 3 percent (sometimes 3.5) for Credit cards.
New Jersey law (since 2023) prohibits any fee or surcharge in excess of what the restaurant (or other business) is paying for processing.
Properly speaking they should NOT be surcharging for Debit cards—but the problem is that Debit cards can be put through as Credit cards—hence treated as such.
To be processed as a true Debit card transaction requires input of the PIN.
As for restaurants in general—
Yes, as you know THEIR food costs and labor costs have risen a lot.
Especially food costs.
Everybody’s trying to survive….
And the new factor is, tariffs affect a lot of food prices (for example, coffee (!!), seafood, fruits and vegetables.
By the way, professional-grade pizza ovens can cost between 10,000 and 50,000+.
Many/most are made in China, and tariffs can really jack up that cost.
And so forth…
