Dec 31, 2024 FCC Broadband Map was just released

My address in Stockton CA. now shows 300 Mbps upload. Comcast has really expanded there Mid-Split, and FDX DOCSIS 4 areas since the last update. I pulled up a area in Colorado, you can see were they went straight from Low-Split to FDX DOCSIS 4.

Absolute abysmal progress here. The red line is the county. To make matters worse these lightly colored areas don’t even have midsplit but show up since they’ve misrepresented random houses in seas of sub split neighborhoods.

There are only two small areas in our entire county that have midsplit and they are those two dark areas: Harpers Ferry and a brand new development in Charles Town. Meanwhile Glo Fiber and Frontier have really been doing serious work building out here.

It’s a lot more work than fiber increasing speeds, since every node and amp needs to be replaced.

In many cases, old in-home equipment also needs to be removed.

Nothing is misrepresented, you just have to zoom in to see which addresses have it.

You are lucky to have a fiber option besides Comcast. With Glo Fiber coming in there, I’m sure Comcast will speed up there upgrades. It does seem kind of odd, that it shows random Comcast Mid-Split addresses scattered around.

Comcast had previously claimed (in years past) to be targeting to be “essentially complete” by end of year 2025 (in Comcast speak, that meant the special areas (and there are always special areas) would not count). The reality of deployments (equipment, staffing, ???) apparently have deferred the “essentially complete” part of Project Genesis. There is still a lot of time (7-ish months) for deployments to be done (and some of the expected mid-split deployments have already been upgraded to D4.0 FDX to avoid a double hop), but for those waiting, they shall see what is actually delivered by year end.

Unlikely to change the schedules, actually. Comcast is not going to chase the current shiny (look left, look right, look left, look right), but has a (long term) committed plan for deployments. Where one is in the plan has never been shared. Which is an annoyance for those who want it yesterday.

That would be a smart place to start, so I am a little surprised they aren’t doing that approach, but I see tons of areas with no FTTH that have already been upgraded to mid-split.

Man-of-Leisure it is misrepresented. The majority of these areas when you zoom in are only highlighted because there are random addresses incorrectly marked. I’ve checked all of them. The new amps and nodes are easy to spot in person, they aren’t in these areas.
I understand it is not a simple process; however, the county next door (equally rural, potentially more) has already been upgraded. Much of it was actually upgraded in 2023-24. I find it frustrating.

With the rare exceptions (usually involving someone else owning rights to your property (HOA, MDU)), everyone has a fiber option. Just not at residential prices (I have gotten quotes for fiber deployments which needed to be run for a hundred kilometers, but it was not a cheap option). Cheap, available, fast. Pick any one.

Yea I noticed how Comcast randomly upgrades some areas straight from Low-Split to FDX DOCSIS 4. With no competition in some neighborhoods. And you got other neighborhoods, were you got two other fiber providers, and Comcast is still on Low-Split, I don’t get it.

Always made me wonder, what are they using for DSL backhaul in rural areas?

The central office is connected with fiber, right?

I remember seeing an article (can’t find it now) that a guy in Downieville, CA was tired of waiting for the area to be upgraded from DSL to fiber, so he just ordered AT&T enterprise fiber instead lol

I assume there’s fiber in the area, since there’s a cell tower that must have fiber backhaul, and the 18Mb ADSL2+ in the area must also have fast backhaul.
