On my budget and how expensive food is here, I shop at Aldi’s. It is a Godsend, bu-ut… Their breads are awful and they do lack some important ingredients. I’ve emailed them in the past for suggestions and they acted on it, but now it seems contact us doesn’t work. I want hard rolls.

There is work that Robots can HELP humans, like his HelpMate. Robots that get workers out from hazardous places, like painting cars. Those devices need humans to operate them, but make life better for those workers and amplify them.

There ARE jobs that it’s better for humans that robots help them do.

Self Checkout is bad, it’s not one of those ideas. It introduces too many new problems and puts customers in danger of being falsely accused of theft, there are stories about this that I’ve read and I’ve witnessed it.

That statement makes little sense. People were stealing before, just they weren’t being watched so intently, and the store wasn’t prosecuting the thefts.

It’s not like the self-check out registers caused them to steal or can accuse people of theft. People did that. Also, police and courts usually need more evidence than a store employee saying a patron stole something to cite and/or convict them of shoplifting, such as other witnesses and camera footage.

That’s your real problem with self-checkout, YOU had to be the enforcer. YOU had to make sure customers scanned everything properly. YOU were the accuser if they didn’t.

That’s just silly. I wasn’t “the enforcer” and that wasn’t what I didn’t like. It was boring and it was hard to catch theft that way. I’ve seen your reponses but this one isn’t up to par.

A little reading and you’d see videos and articles on how innocent people get nailed a day after for stealing when they were mistaken for the thieves.

But rather than look into it, you try and do a “gotcha” and make outlandish accusations.

As the opportunities for ‘free stuff’ narrow because of better technology the same complaints are given. A certain type of people complained when businesses started to employ plain clothes undercover agents to deter theft. Later on when camera surveillance was introduced the same people again were upset. Now with automated checkout being policed the cries start up again. Aldi will have self checkout. It’s going to happen.

That is the worst article, a piece written interviewing a defense attorney (on TikTok?) looking to get their name out. Please provide better evidence.

“1. Intentional Shoplifting” No shit, intentional shoplifters get charged with shoplifting. What a concept! Zero to do with self-checkout and it’s the right thing to happen.
“2. Accidental Shoplifting” It was an accident. Happens with store register clerks too. They forget to scan something, or they ring up the item wrong. This is often why there are store personnel watching self-checkout, to correct the accidents if possible. If it wasn’t an accident, it was very likely intentional, see #1.
“3. The Truly Innocent” NOT shoplifting. Happens when using store register clerks too. Nothing listed with that is unique to self-checkout.

Do you really think “asset protection” is going to review hours of “grainy video” to go after shoppers days, weeks, or months AFTER they left the store grounds? It’s written off as “shrinkage” at that point, unless it’s a repeat offender who has intentionally stolen thousands of dollars worth of products. In those cases, the police are involved and investigate, not asset protection.

Being “Mistaken for theives” has nothing to do with self-checkout.

There are “petty” shoplifters aplenty enslaved by addiction or “debt” to crims
deemed too minor to be worth expensive LE resources.

Many years ago, my wife worked in a drugstore where it was the Asset Protection guy who was doing the stealing.

The GIANT markets around here have them. At first it was a novelty and did call for assistance. Now, when they are out, they just get in the way. Maybe they roam at night but I don’t see them much, anymore.

I had BIL (totally on wife’s side) who was a small town cop and drunk. He’d steal when on duty because he had access. 😞

Sparkchaser Robot gets in my way it will probably be rammed by my cart, I already want to do that to the Walmart order pickers as it is, I wouldn’t ram the workers they are doing their jobs but dang three big picker carts in one aisle with other shoppers gets to be a bit much.

Did what exactly a week after the fact? Send Asset Protection to people’s homes for theft at the self-checkout? You get vague on this topic when it comes up and generally can’t defend your idea self-check out causes shoplifting.

More arguing and fault finding. Yes, they had people arrested a week later. For one thing, they weren’t there daily, only part time, so the had to fit in things.
