On May 10, 1869, a golden spike was driven in a ceremony in Promontory, Utah, marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.

On May 10, 1933, book burnings were held in 34 cities across Germany, targeting authors whose ideologies were in conflict with Nazism. In an eerie coincidence, among those works burned were the writings of beloved nineteenth-century German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, who over 100 years earlier wrote in his 1820–1821 play Almansor the famous admonition, “Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen": “Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people.”

Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured in Irwinville, Georgia in 1865.

John Wayne Gacy was executed by the State of Illinois in 1994 for the murders of 33 young men and boys.

Is Golden Spike National Historic Spike located at Promontory Point?
No. Promontory Point is thirty-five miles south of Golden Spike. The correct name for this location is Promontory Summit. For unknown reasons, some reporters and railroad officials in 1869 wrote that the transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Point, and this falsehood has been perpetuated throughout history in textbooks, films, and all other forms of media.

It was taught extensively in the NYC school system throughout my grade school/high school years, with films of the most gruesome nature, in textbooks and extensive discussions about the war and the Holocaust. My sophomore year in high school was dedicated to world history that would necessarily include both world wars, after the freshman year being dedicated to American history.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Saturday the agency and state law enforcement in Florida have arrested nearly 800 people over four days in a “massive, multi-agency immigration enforcement crackdown.”

Thomas Kennedy, spokesperson for the Florida Immigrant Coalition, characterized the operation as “part of this longstanding effort by state government to basically force local police departments to conduct immigration enforcement. These police officers became police officers to be police officers, not immigration agents,” he told CNN Sunday. “They should be out there policing the highways, not terrorizing undocumented people that are just trying to live in the state of Florida, pay taxes and work.”

Using incarceration rates as a proxy for crime, a team of economists analyzed 150 years of U.S. Census data and found immigrants were consistently less likely to be incarcerated than people born in the U.S. They also found beginning in 1960, the incarceration gap widened such that immigrants today are 60% less likely to be incarcerated than the U.S. born.
