Looks like the moms in the NYC/NJ area will have pretty nice weather this weekend after today’s rain moves off.

I put the dog out this morning. It was pouring rain. There was no rain in the forecast last night. Wet Dog Protocol. So much for the weather forecast.

My lawn needs cutting but that’s not going to happen until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest. Working today, tomorrow and part of Monday. I will be the shame of the neighbourhood.

We had our water meter replaced yesterday. The city is replacing all the water meters to upgrade them to radio remote reading. It took about 30 minutes. No issues, although the installer had to be very careful applying the slip joint pliers to the main shutoff as it was really stiff. The valve had likely had not been operated since the house was built, 70 years ago.

No proper tool so teeth don’t chew valve? … Vibration, penetrating oil, patience.
Hopefully it won’t need operating again for another century?

Will you still be able to verify readings at the meter?

Somewhat-Reticent He used the slip joint pliers on the handle and gently wiggled it back and forth until it moved. There was a real risk of breaking the valve stem otherwise. This is the drinking water supply, so oil is a non no. Patience? Yes.

May be minimal.
The water supply should be pressurized, so risk of intrusion from oil is nil.

Somewhat-Reticent There was no handle damage. The rismk of breaking was greater. Never use oil on water supply pipes.

I’ve experienced earthquakes near me. A number of years ago (when I was still working), an earthquake hit in North Jersey. I felt the building shake, then thought - “Was that an earthquake”? Yup.

Weather finally straightened itself out early this afternoon. Mostly stayed home. Made (homemade) pasta sauce and spaghetti. About to store the leftover sauce. It’s always better the next day (or the day after that). Outside work to do tomorrow, including pruning and antenna maintenance.

Dks01 And don’t forget the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes: On February 7, 1812, the most violent of a series of earthquakes near Missouri causes a so-called fluvial tsunami in the Mississippi River, actually making the river run backward for several hours. Actually a lake was formed in North West Tennessee named Reelfoot Lake as a result of the earthquake.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!

Like the moms, the weather is beautiful today in the NYC/NJ area.

telcodad this is the first Mother’s Day without my mom. She passed away last year after a battle with breast cancer. I tell all the kids (I have teenaged co-workers) at work who think their mommy is there to do everything for them and they think they are a bunch of spoiled brats that their “mommy” is going to someday be in the cemetery and they are going to have to do everything from cooking their own meals to walking their own dog. It’s not easy.

Spent today ticking items off my voluminous to-do list. My mother has been gone since 2018, and she’d have appreciated it. Pruned some of the overgrowth outside.

Italian sausage patties for dinner, because it’s too dry outside (25% RH, with a stiff breeze) to grill them in the back yard, even with all the rain we got. Burgers and uncured hot dogs some other time.
