Bombtrad Any thought that a worker doing over 12 hours per day regularly will be accomplishing productive work is simply a nonsense. Lack of sleep will not do anything for the company but reduce productivity but more importantly the quality of the output will decline markedly.
While working non-stop (even with some short breaks included) for 12 hours would be much less than optimal, I think one could still do 12 - 14 hours of productive work a day as long as there were sufficient breaks (i,e, some nap time after lunch) for rest and they don’t need to waste time on commuting. Based on the information (i.e.: need to notify superior for over 5mins) the company was highly unreasonable with rest.
In any case, asking people to do 20 hours/day for more than a day is simply insane. It’s possible that the mid-level banker was one of those who can get by fine with very little sleep, but most people are not like that,
Aaron Haney, the banker in question, was let go this month after the posts went viral, people who worked with him said. Several analysts said he was well-liked and often worked as hard as his juniors.
