I wish DSLreports.com puts up a good bye message

As a long-time member of the DSLR community, I wanted to express a thought that has been on my mind. Many of us who have been part of this platform for years are still checking in regularly, hoping for updates. The absence of any official communication has left us feeling a bit lost.

I understand that changes are a part of any community, and I’ve seen discussions on Reddit where current moderators mentioned being aware of the situation. However, I believe that a simple goodbye message from DSLR would mean a great deal to us old timers. It would provide a sense of closure to those who have invested so much time and energy into this community.

It's disheartening to see the platform as it is now, and while we all understand that things change, having some form of acknowledgment from DSLR would help us process this transition. A farewell message would not only honor the legacy of the community but also show appreciation for the many members who have contributed over the years.

EDIT: now it shows they are on vacation but still doesn’t tell us much.

I'm just saying MIGHT NOT.

You have two parts to having a web presence (well, many more, but...) 1 is the hosting, 2 is owning the domain. If they were full of anger and spite (some wonder if that is true, I have no idea) they could have just let it all go, which would mean a squatter could swoop it up and put it in limbo for decades.

The other is the hosting, do they have it all backed up forever and what would it take to rehost all of it (it would be a bit of a job).

Running a site isn't easy peasy. It took me almost 3 years to get my site where it is, but I had no idea what I was doing (I still don't). My site is not a forum, it's a review and information site, but it was a lot of work, despite its retro feel.

I learned on the Reddit forum the software DSLR used was 100% custom which I believe helps explain what happened and why. This was my explanation I posted there:

Yeah, that seems like a plausible explanation. If the motivation for getting out is the effort required to maintain the infrastructure, then there's little sales value in the property; a potential buyer would know they were getting a fixer-upper. At some point there's no point in trying to sell.

I suspect it's going to be a long vacation.

People have moved on to this Broadband Bulletin forum, as well as some other sites that have some different focuses.

It would be nice to have the archives available from the old site, even if just a couple of years of the archives....

But a full resurrection of the old site would not be that relevant or useful.

If whomever had the keys to the old site, had ANY plans to sell the site (or even just the name) they messed it up for themselves by the lack of any transition plan.

Whatever residual value there may have been, was pretty much eliminated.

Plus if they were to try and sell it, the new owners might not like the way the forums had become.

It might end up being a different site completely if it comes back.

My gut tells me that the current owner of DSLReports is likely seeing these comments. I really wish they had offered us a way to purchase the archives (and cover the hosting bills) with an as-is disclaimer, since the site is probably quite broken. At that point, we could (and still can) have placed it in read-only mode.

Are any of the old DSLR mods here who knew about the shutdown, and was there an attempt to purchase it?
